I've now read 'The Hobbit' and am halfway through 'The Fellowship Of The Ring'. I'm on a crusade to read the entire series at the moment and its an interesting contrast between the source literature and the films. In particular what strikes me is that some of the important parts of the books have been cut completely from the films ( I guess for timing reasons, they were long enough as they were!)
But they do recreate the majority of the battles quite well and the casting was more or less spot on. It'll be interesting to see what Guillermo Del Toro does with 'The Hobbit' as there's scope for a great film ( in particular the Battle Of Five Armies and the conflict with Smaug).

I'm about halfway through the Fellowship Of The Ring at the moment and really enjoying it..it helps that in the edition I've got there's actually some notes on things like the Elvish script and other particulars of Middle Earth, which help a lot.
