I'm seeing this tomorrow night- it'll be my first trip to the cinema in a long while! Michael Sheen plays Brian Clough in a screen adaptation of David Peace's book, which centres around Clough's disastrous 44 day stint as manager at Leeds United. There's been a lot of debate on the book and Clough himself lately surrounding the release of the film, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the fuss is about....

All the critics I've read have given it 5 stars and they've all raved about Michael Sheen, so you should enjoy it!

Oh, no doubt he's rightly remembered as a legend of the game- his ideas were way ahead of his time and he was always good value for a quote or two.

I think the FA were too stuck in their ways to give him the job- after all he didn't care who he upset, and more or less the FA want someone they can use as a scapegoat if/when the England team fails which he wouldn't have taken lightly.

The film focuses more on his time with Leeds, with some flashbacks to when he was at Derby which serve to show how he got to that point and what his character and personality traits said about him as well as the level of success he achieved. Michael Sheen's rather good as Clough, and I also liked Jim Broadbent as the Derby chairman Sam Longson.

Seemingly the filmmakers got the majority of their facts right, and there was some nice use of archive TV footage to put it all into some kind of context. You can really see why Clough's family might have objected to the book/film, though, as it really does show the man at his most arrogant, which is when he was enjoying a great deal of success, and it seems to be the case that they wanted to show him as wanting to get one over on Don Revie after getting the Leeds job, and a lot's made of the rivalry between the two.

But overall its a good film, and I may now have to get hold of a copy of the book to see how faithful to it the film was.....

Yes he wasn't the type to take things lying down...the FA would have had a big problem with him.

I don't usually watch football films...well, apart from Escape To Victory that is   .....but this one looks good enough to tempt me!
