19-year-old Hannah Murray is tipped to be the companion in next year's fifth season of "Doctor Who" says The News Of The World.

Murray, who plays OCD-suffering Cassie Ainsworth on the raunchy British teenage drama series "Skins", will join Matt Smith's eleventh 'The Doctor' in the TARDIS when it returns in 2010.

The news comes not long after word that the number of planned specials for this year, starring David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor, looks to have been shrunk. Instead of three or four there will only be two - the Easter episode "Planet of the Dead" and the Christmas Episode. A third special has been pushed back into early 2010 (though could be a New Year's Day special).

'Planet', co-starring Michelle Ryan ("Bionic Woman," "Jekyll"), involves a mysterious thief who ends up tagging along with the Doctor and leads to a 'shocking event' in his life. It was partially shot in Dubai and will air next month.

"Rome" actress Lindsay Duncan stars as the companion in the Christmas episode which sees the return of the Ood and will borrow elements from the novel 'Who' tie-in novel "The Highest Science". Model Gemma Chan will also star in the production which is currently filming.

The third special kicks off shooting at the end of the month. Set on Mars, it will include Aussie actor Peter O'Brien as the villain, and will serve as David Tennant's final story.

In an interesting coincidence, Matt Smith and Hannah Murray played brother and sister while Lindsay Duncan played their mother in the West End tour of the acclaimed play "That Face" last year.

Hannah Murray

Is it me or are they really gearing for a young market this time...even younger than before....hope they keep the older audiences

I'd be happy if Hannah Murray is the new assistant....she was great in Skins   Maybe by having a younger Doctor Who and assistant they're trying to make it like American shows such as Buffy etc that have "beautiful" people as leads?

Only 3 specials instead of 4?   Is Doctor Who a victim of the credit crunch? The Daleks and Cybermen couldn't beat him......but the recession can     I know they're axing or cutting down on shows on various channels, so it could well be they've had to cut down on Doctor Who too? Course, by only having 2 specials this year and 1 next year, people will be desperate to see the the new series next year!

Yep I agree she was excellent in Skins and you could be right about wanting it with young and beautiful people to appeal internationally ...i just hope they keep up the standard and don't dumb it down

yep its strange that they have been cut   this recession is going to bring back alot of repeats i reckon

I don't think the writing will slip Luc. Steven Moffat's in charge and he's an excellent writer so I'm looking forward to some great episodes

With the specials being filmed in America and Dubai, it's possible the BBC have been told to cut back on the specials to save money....I just hope they're able to condense the stories down to 3 specials instead of 4 as originally planned.

As it should be- I'm young, free, and single, I can have all the assistants I want surely? I've also read today that one of the other specials will be set on Mars, and it'll be David Tennant's last adventure before he hands the Time Lord role over to Matt Smith.

Let's hope they have an episode with both Georgia and Hannah in it for you both   Oh I've had a thought......will Georgia Moffett's character be returning after her father changes into the new Doctor? That could lead to some comic moments if that happens
