I've just finished reading this, the late Radio One DJ John Peel's autobiography. It's a good read, with Peel himself completing the first part before his death of a heart attack ( he talks about his early years, schooldays, time in the army on National Service, family life etc) and the second part is written by his widow Sheila with help from their children, talking about him as a person, his radio career and other passions.

His is an interesting story, and his career sounds like it must have been great fun working with his colleagues and the bands/artists he invited into his studio to record live sessions. There's no doubt that he was a broadcating legend and Radio One institution.....

That expression "he lived his life to the full" would definitely apply to John Peel I'd imagine! He must have met some amazing people and had lots of tales to tell. Does it cover his time in the US too Morphy?

What does the book's title mean? It kind of sounds familiar for some reason but I can't think where I've heard it before?

Yeah, he does talk about his time in America in the first section. And Margrave Of The Marshes is just a jokey title he gave himself for some reason!

Yeah, people forget he had a life outside Radio One! He's also responsible for getting a bewildering array of bands their first major exposure- he did a lot to champion exciting new music.

I remember where I probably heard the title before......he was on This is Your Life a few years ago!

When you said about him promoting new bands, I suddenly remembered I'd seen the prog!

I always thought he seemed more comfortable on the radio than telly to be honest.
