[not sure where to put this Luc- is there an 'actors' forum here?]

It is hard to think of who your favourite actor is at any one time, and personally mine is always changing. However, there are some actors who I think have done exceptionally well, in their choice of roles; overcoming personal difficulties; being an icon for a certain time etc. So I wanted to start a thread highlighting such people, instead of the usual 'who's your favourite actor?' question.

In praise of.... Joaquin Phoenix:

He is the actor who was never meant to be a star. His brother River was the one everybody raved about: the talent, the looks, the potential. But as we all know, he was snatched away one terrible night, overcome by problems no one knew he had, and Joaquin had to pick up the pieces.

I never thought Joaquin would make it as an actor either: River's shadow was too great and he would forever be thought of as 'River's little brother'. But I was wrong. I first noticed he was talented in 'To Die For', an underrated black 'comedy'[?] co starring Nicole Kidman. Then came 'Gladiator', when we all thought 'hang on a minute. Is the younger Phoenix actually talented too?'

Since then, his choice of roles has gradually built him up into a major star: 'Quills'; 'Buffalo Soldiers'; 'Signs'; 'Hotel Rwanda', 'Walk the Line' etc. showing him to be a most versatile actor.

I will always have a soft spot for Joaquin Phoenix, partly because I was a big fan of River and feel so sorry that poor Joaquin had to witness his death and somehow keep going. He has proved he is a talented actor, outgrown the shadow and deserves a pat on the back. Well done to you, Joaquin Phoenix

No K no actors forum...up to now I saw no need though I have to say it would be nice to have somewhere to put recent actors and Directors deaths apart from in the off topic section so perhaps its something we can implement? We can see what others have to say and think and then a final decision can be made.

As for Jaoquin I really like him myself... I particularly thought he was great in To Die For though I love that film and of course Gladiator....

I keep forgetting that he's a brother of River

How quickly they forget...

I do wonder whether River would have become the superstar people predicted and what he would look like now. Because Joaquin was the spitting image of him when they were little- but looks nothing like him now   I noticed in Walk the Line that Joaquin has a really bad hare lip, never knew that before

I didn't say I forgot River Pheonix himself just that I dissociate the brother from him now....which is probably more a testament to Jaoquin's acting then anything else...that you think of him separately now

I do think of Heath Ledger in a similar way to River now both had great futures!!

And I would never have a slimming section here

Why do I have visions of both K and Cat in tight white pants big shoulders and helmets bending over in front of me
